Thank you to those who offered their advice on my camera vs camcorder battle royale.

I decided to get a digital camera instead of a camcorder. As jonathan mentioned about himself, I, too, take tons of pictures of the kid, so I know I’ll get much more use out of a camera than a camcorder. I like to pretend that I’d be all creative and motivated to make super cool movies with my camcorder, especially with the movie-making capabilites of my mac. I could add snazzy music and cool effects, make DVDs for family and friends, win awards, etc.

But it’s me we’re talking about here and we all know that’s not going to happen. I’d end up having hours and hours of boring, unedited video and nothing to show for it but hours and hours of boring, unedited videos. The camera at least lets me click away and not worry so much about having to create something out of it. I can be lazy AND capture my memories all at the same time. win-win.

After a lot of research and review-reading, I went for the fuji finepix e900. It was the best camera for the features I wanted/needed and the money I had available. Naturally, I yearn for a fancy digital SLR, with all the bells and whistles, yearn and burn like mad. But I don’t have that kind of money, and the learning curve for those cameras is a bit too much right now. The finepix seemed like a good meeting point between a basic point-and-shoot and a digital SLR. I’m going to have to work my way up to one of those puppies.

I’m quite pleased with my purchase, that’s for sure. It knocks the happy right out of my old camera. And I’m absolutely delighted with the video capture. My old camera was a piece of junk! Ugh. I hate every single picture and video I ever took with it. the past two years of my life? RUINED. Thanks a lot sony cybershot.

I love my new little fuji though. She’s sweet. I haven’t taken any stunning pictures with her yet, mostly because I am camera-retarded, but I’m getting there and soon I’ll be winning praise for my mad skillz and glorious snaps.

The camera came with a lousy 16MB card, so I’ve taken only a handful pictures the past few days. But today I purchased a large-capacity card, which means I can really let loose.
